April 2001: THE NEON JUDGEMENT

The best Belgian band of all time is back. This month they´re coming to Sweden to perform their ´80´s set at Hi Tech Muslo, Borås on Friday the 27th of April and at Harrow Road in Örebro the 28th. Yippe-kee-ya!

I discovered the duo consisting of Dirk Da Davo (vocals/electronics) and TB Frank (vocals/guitar) in 1987. They were considered being a part of the new Belgian scene together with bands such as Front 242, á;GRUMH..., A Split Second & Poesie Noire. Looking back today they were much more than that. They had southern blues, Jamaican rhythms & Morricone´s spaghetti influences too in their music -something that "groovers ";-) like Klinik & á;GRUMH can´t ever claim to have had....

It was the cool mixture of "Space Cowboy music", hard electronic beats & fantastic songs that appealed to me back then...and still do. No other band from this era is ageing better than TNJ. Even when they abandoned their ´80´s sound 1990 with "The Insult" album they were still on top. This is an album that really has inspired us in terms of programming & songwriting.

In the early April Tears days I bought a Korg DDD1 drum-machine only because TNJ used it, but we never had it sounding as cool as theirs... In 1989 I saw them play at Kulturhuset in Jönköping and I still hold that show as one of the best I´ve ever seen. It may not have been on the biggest of stages or with the best of light-settings, but the presence of the two coolest Belgian Cowboys ever, a lot of smoke and of course a remarkable setlist made it very special to all of us that went there. And now I get the chance to bring some people that didn´t see it back then! I wouldn´t miss it for the world.
