July 2001: THE PIXIES

Boston´s legendary four-piece The Pixies consisted of Black Francis a.k.a Frank Black on vocals & guitar, Kim Deal, bass guitar, Joey Santiago Lead Guitar & David Lovering on drums. The English record company 4AD signed the band´s demo that was so good they released it as "Come On Pilgrim" in 1987. After that the band released four more albums, including the classic "Doolittle" in 1989, before putting a closure in 1992. The sound of The Pixies was mainly cool rolling basses & soft melodic vocals in the verses & then the exploding, almost punky choruses. Something that had a BIG influence on Kurt Cobain amongst others.

In my eyes they are a genuinely classic rock band, with a trademark sound. Unique. When The April tears started out we really wanted to sound like "Monkey´s gone to heaven". When I look back today and listen to the early demos I realize that we built our songs in the same way. I´ve always loved simple, straight basses & exploding guitars. When I look around today at the Swedish bands that started out in the early nineties & are still around I understand that none of us would´ve begun in the way we did if it wasn´t for Frank Black & co.

The Pixies was one of those bands that made teenagers all over this planet of sound bandstarters.
